Cape/South African Shelducks

The male South African Shelduck has a grey head and upper neck, a buff lower neck and breast, a chestnut body, strikingly marked black, white and green wings, and a black beak. Female - The female is similar except for a white face with a dark-brown head and neck.

Size

Typical Adult is about 64cm (25in).

Food

Aquatic plants, grasses, grain, molluscs, crustaceans, small fish, worms, and insects.

Habitat/Range

Wetlands, shallow lakes, rivers, ponds and grasslands of Namibia, and South Africa. In Winter many will move further to the north-east of their breeding ground.

Breeding

April to September. The South African Shelduck or Cape Shelduck like other Shelducks nest in old animal burrows and cavities.

Eggs

7-15 (dull-white colour)
