Bewick Swans Swans

The Bewick's Swan and the Whistling Swan are known as Tundra Swans. This swan was named after the engraver 'Thomas Bewick' who specialised in illustrations of birds and animals.

Size

Typical Adult is 115-140cm (45-55in).

Food

Mainly aquatic plants, leaves, roots stems, but will also graze on grasses, and grain. They will also eat animal matter such as insect larvae.

Habitat/Range

Lakes, marshes, estuaries in the tundra region of north Russia and Siberia. Winters in China, Japan, UK, and northern Europe

Breeding

Early May further south, late May to June further north.

Eggs

3 to 5 (creamy white colour).
